My Culture

I have been in New Zealand for ten years.  Recently my family resettled here and I have been spending a lot of time with them; it has given me an opportunity to revisit my own culture.

The nation of Somalia occupies the horn of Africa along the Red sea and Indian Ocean coast.  Islam penetrated the Somali coast almost certainly during the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed.  A heavily Islamic society, and dominated by men, it is still strongly influenced by women.  My special interest is the role of women in my culture. An important issue for Somali women is Circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Here in New Zealand I have the freedom to be myself, to experience life, to make mistakes and to learn from them without putting my whole position in society and family at risk.  An important part of life in Somali culture is Islam.

Stamps

Countries to portray themes and aspects of national life, often use stamps.   These ones illustrate my special interest in women and children.
